I have been on a ketogenic diet for the past three months. I have lost weight, feel better and am less bloated.

The ketogenic diet aims to keep the body “in ketosis.” Ketosis is a metabolic state in which the brain and other tissues in the body do not rely on glucose for their primary energy source. Instead, depend on something called ketones or beta-hydroxybutyrate. 

What is a Beta-hydroxybutyrate?

Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is a ketone body found in small amounts in the blood and tissues of humans and animals. It is also known as 3-hydroxybutyric acid or 3-hydroxybutanoic acid.(source)


The brain uses BHB as its primary fuel source, especially when glucose levels are low during fasting or when glycogen stores are depleted. It’s also used by the heart and muscles to produce energy during exercise.
